Sometimes I get nostalgic. I moved a lot in my life, an average of once every two years. I went to ten schools in thirteen years (K-12), and the one thing that was a constant was music. Music and TV. The two things that were constant were music and TV. And family. The three…three things that were constant were music, TV, family and the ever increasing amount of sarcasm that made it into my humor.

I made it down for the weekly KFJC (http://kfjc.org) staff meeting this past week, for the first time in about seven years. I’m hoping to do a show a month there. I’ll keep you posted.

With that I bring you this latest episode. If you’re a fan of nighttime police dramas, then you’ll enjoy this show.

Also, I recently saw Radio Moscow play 12 Galaxies in SF (http://www.12galaxies.com/flash.html). Check out their MySpace page, and support live music. I also have a few San Francisco artists in this show, including punk polka faves Polkacide, the Japanese yodeling cowboy Toshio Hirano, and Sesame Street cover band Cookie Mongoloid; you’ve never heard anything like them before.
A Season In Hell #12: Waiting for the Man

***Warning*** Because of the need for server space, I will be removing Episode #1 and possibly #2 by Thursday, August 2nd, 2007. You have been warned.

I spent a year in DC last week. I was there for an education conference, and I had the luxury of seeing the New York Dolls perform at the legendary 9:30 Club. The club has been open since the 70’s, but obviously in a very different location. What a great club; amazing sound and stage. The Dolls were incredible too. Only Sylvain and Johanson are alive from the original lineup, but the rest of the band seriously kicked ass. They have a new CD out, go get it.

I got to walk “The Mall”, which is the federal gov’t area. Quite impressive, even if you don’t like the schmuck who lives in the white house right now.

This week I include some early NY Dolls. I also have some live tracks from Tom Waits with the Kronos Quartet doing the theme to my favorite show: “The Wire”. If you haven’t seen this great police drama on HBO, you’re missing the best written show on TV. Some live Lou Reed shows up near the end of the podcast today. A real rarity is included in the guise of Neil Young. He never released “Chrome Dreams”, but all of the music made it on to something eventually. This version of “Powderfinger” never did.

I hope you enjoy the show. Please leave a comment on the website: http://johnhell.podomatic.com and tell your friends about thee show by clicking the “send to friends” link on the page.
Transnational, it loops the northeast May-October and makes runs down the west coast during November-April. Founded by No Media Kings, we've been making our own fun since 2003 -- running on pure volunteer power and dirty dirty gasoline. More info at http://perpetualmotionroadshow.com

In January the San Francisco show will having touring writers:

Cort is a southern Alberta raised roots songwriter. From a jug hound in
the oilpatch to selling beads in Peru, Cort has roamed from Tuktoyuktuk to
Buenos Aires in search of what he found to be his passion at the ripe age
of 23; Songwriting! The balance between melody, poetry and up tempo pieces
has him compared to such artists as Arlo Guthrie and Tracy Chapman. This,
his nomadic tossed salad past, along with his charming stage presence adds
to a combination in which you will rarley find in folk songwriters.
www.cortmusic.com

Sabrina Lightstone is a Toronto poet, who was born in Montreal. Her work,
Beat-like, musical and romantic, synthesizes rhythm and feeling. She is an
emo poet, a title that refers to the sentimentality and intimacy of her
voice. Her goal is to evoke, overwhelm, inspire. With intellectual
excitement Sabrina studies literature and writing at York University.
Passionate for city life, she enjoys both crowded places and silent
spaces,
painting and music. Sabrina has performed at various Toronto word events.
She believes in time travel and in travelling the world. Her artistic
analysis of the universe is ultimately hopeful.

"Animal", "Enigma", "spiritually uplifting" are other peoples' words to
describe slam poet and conscious emcee Dane Jah Ras. Selected for 2005's
Second Place Toronto slam team competing in Canada's Festival of Spoken
Word, Dane is currently working on more literary works and his second rap
album. His performances include a capella raps, aggressive slam poetry and
picturesque prose. Of his first LP Red a journalist proclaimed, "I think
the thoughtful, rhythmic Dane Jah Ras has fullfiled his duty in expanding
the listener's mental horizons".Check out his website
(www.danejahras.com), come, and judge for yourself.

And local favorites:

LadyMonster- I write about my life and I write it as it happens, without
being afraid of letting others know the intimate details. Most of my
writing is about my sexuality and sexual experiences. I believe that bedroom doors should be open. Understanding occurs when we throw off the covers, turn on the lights and begin expressing and talking about our desires, experiences and fears. Face the truth, and talk about your fantasies. Don't be afraid to explore your imagination and new paths. The power and experience of your sexuality is limitless.

Nicole Henares - lives in San Francisco with a Finnish bluesman, and feels
awkward writing the shameless self-promotion required for a bio.

Back in many of our grandparent's or parent's day, womanhood was achieved when you had your first visit from Aunt Flow, lost your virginity, or gave birth; and someone patted you on the back and said "You are a woman now."
But that isn't the case these days. Womanhood has become less about a predetermined certain moment, preconceived notion, or even a certain body part. It takes something totally different to be a woman these days, and we have the tales to prove it.

Come hear some great stories on the subject of womanhood form: Jeri Cain Rossi, Lori Selke, Sherilyn Connelly, Katrina James, Charlie Anders, Shauna Rogan, Julia Serano ,Gina de Vries, Angie Krass ......

Drink some happy hour cocktails! from 6pm to 10pm
60s and 70s Latin, Boogaloo, Cumbias, Soul, Bhangra,
Booty Bass and more

She has spent the past few years focusing her political energies around the fight for comprehensive, sex-positive sexuality education; the movement for sex-workers' rights; and the inclusion of bi and trans women in dyke spaces. She hopes she doesn't sound humorless in this bio.

Daylight: new work by John Wanzel

OPENING RECEPTION

SATURDAY JULY 23 6-9PM

BSD is proud to present Daylight, new work by John Wanzel. The exhibition is in search of unmitigated truth and light within a world without. Daylight expounds on the form of the streetlight and the surrounding real-estate. In the ever changing landscape of the city (four unit apartment buildings rehabbed into 2 unit condos, vacant lots replaced by 3 condos, a dry cleaners and a bouquet of posh stores) all that remains are the sidewalks, the street signs and the cobra head luminaries atop metal poles.

Scientists create models to prove theories of nature; artists examine nature through prose, image and sound. In this exhibition, Mr. Wanzel creates miniature aesthetic amalgamations of the walkways that connect the city to itself and explores old theories of the geocentric and heliocentric universe through sculpture and drawing, in hopes of finding the Good within this new composition of the city.

This search is not done in the dead of night, but in the sweltering heat of the summer, underneath our daytime star, the Sun; a place where the luminance of sodium vapor lights have no use.

John Wanzel is a Chicago based artist, writer and radio producer. He received his BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1999. He is a Co-Founder and Executive Producer of Blind Spot, a weekly live experimental radio show on WLUW 88.7 Chicago. In 1999 he founded stopGOstop.com, a portal/collective website for several writers, artists, and cultural workers living in Chicago. He has also served as the Assistant Director of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago's Gallery 2 since 2002.

Founded in 2002, Lulu is the web's premier independent publishing marketplace for digital do-it-yourselfers. It's the only place on the web where you can publish, sell and buy any and all things digital — books, music, comics, photographs, movies and well, you get the idea. We simply provide the tools that leave control of content in the hands of the people who created the content. You see, Lulu is a technology company, not a publisher. So you can use Lulu to publish and sell any kind of digital content, and no one here is going to ask you to change anything. Ever. Your vision is entirely YOURS.

There is no set-up fee and no minimum order to publish and sell on Lulu. We manage the online business, including printing, delivery and customer service. You set your own royalty for each piece of content, and at the end of each quarter, we'll mail you a check for the royalties your content generates. Lulu makes a small percentage from each transaction, which means that we only make money if you succeed in selling your work.

1. Lulu is FREE, FAST and EASY
No set-up fees. No minimum order. No delay. No catch. Lulu prints and ships each book as it's bought. The buyer pays the cost — not you. Lulu only makes money if you do.

2. You're in control
You retain all rights to your work. You decide on design and layout. You set the price and royalties. Lulu's not the publisher — you are.

3. Sell to the world
Lulu lets you sell your work through Amazon, Borders, Barnes and Noble — and on Lulu itself. Lulu handles all transactions, order tracking and shipping.

The first film festival where the audience gets to help the film makers finish up their work. This is a new idea in film festivals and market research The audience finally gets to have a chance for all those "Well, if I was making this film..." to be heard and possible used in a helpful way; and the film makers get to hear the general publics opinion of their work, while there is still time to make changes. Big budget Hollywood films can do market research, but besides opinions of friends and family, low to zero budget independent film makers rarely get this feedback.

We will be starting this year to have a DJ spinning songs off demo tapes of beginning musicians and collecting comments from the audience
I'm an SF fine art photographer who's tired of the same old white mat, black frame method of framing I've been doing for years. I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts/suggestions/ideas for an alternative way to protect and present my photos on the wall. I like the idea of no frames or mats, just my photo up on the wall, mounted somehow, and I'm curious about possible protective coverings (varnish? Lacquer?) and how they might or might not work with photos. Anyone??

1. An excuse to put up google and amazon ads

2. Were a vehicle to promote their own writing with little to offer anyone else

This might seem highly critical, but I've been frustrated. So, instead of just bitching about it, I decided to do something about it. I decided to build an online writer's community that I would like to be part of. I wanted to put together a place where writers had their own ad free space to write whatever they wanted and a place where they could free communicate with each other. So, this is what I did.

That being said, I'd like to invite anyone who is interested in this kind of place to join. It's free, but does require a login and password that you can only get from me. There's not much there right now, but the site has only been up for a couple of weeks. If you're interested, send me a message that includes your real name, a valid email address (no hotmail) and your location (city, state) and I'll set you up.
http://player.itvfan.com/test2/

I started this project to make it easy for a musician friend in San Diego to demonstrate his guitar chops online, in an effort to form a new rock band. By having an embedded web music player on his own web page with some samples of his guitar playing, he could narrow down the selection/auditions/phone calls required to form his new band.

I decided to make it even more useful to both musicians and others, by adding 14 internet radio stations and the ability to play music CDs from the computer CDROM drive.

It's free, so feel free to let others know.
